Fan Frenzy Gets Kaizer Chiefs Fined R200 000

Kaizer Chiefs have been fined after their supporters’ on-field celebrations devolved into utter chaos.

Last month, Chiefs beat Stellenbosch FC 4-3 on penalties in their MTN8 clash in front of a sold-out crowd at Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch. This prompted their fans to invade the pitch in order to join their team in celebrating their victory.

Additionally, prior to the match, Amakhosi fans who didn’t have tickets to the match forced their way in by jumping the stadium turnstiles, jumping over the fences, and breaking down barriers in order to access the stands.

As a result, Chiefs were charged and appeared before a Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee on Thursday, 8 September, where they were handed a R200 000 fine.

“A monetary fine of R200 000 of which half is suspended for a period of 24 months on condition that during the period of suspension they are not found guilty of the same offence,” said PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu.

“Both the league as well as Kaizer Chiefs senior officials are directed by the DC to address a press conference at which they would be expected to convey a message to the masses out there regarding this kind of behaviour.”
